For those of you who missed it, it was a pretty good turnout. Congrats to Jack on a great party and 8 years surviving in the bar business in Bangkok!
As anybody who hangs out at Hideaway knows, Jack loves to cook and he's a great chef. It's always a treat when Jack whips up something and last night he went all out with all sorts of sausages, pork chops, stew, pasta salad, etc. I saw people going back for thirds and fourths.
I have to admit that I brought my camera but forgot to take any
Last week BreakofDawning posted probably one of the best journals I've seen on TF. It has some much heart and emotion and tired to communicate her disappointment over what Thailand has become over the last several weeks. I really applaud her not only for her honesty but for finding the words to communicate her feelings so effectively.
On the other hand, there were parts of it that I thought deserved more discussion. So instead of making a comment on her post I thought I would just do my ow
The folks from Darts Thailand came out for the last Drunken Darts event and just posted some of the photos they took.
BTW, if you want to shoot some darts here in Thailand (especially BKK) give these guys a look. Most of the time the matches are very friendly and not ultra-competitive so you can have a good time. I've even shot for Hideaway and prior to that my only dart throwing experience involved plastic darts and velcro. :-)

Assuming Bangkok still exists by Friday . . .
Friday night we're going to be saying farewell to Damien. After a long holiday here he's heading back home for a bit.
So, how about Det5 around 8'ish for anyone who wants to bid him a safe journey.
And one of Thailand's best late night watering holes is celebrating 8 years under the helm of the Mr. German Jack. Yes, the bar with a really appropriate name, The Hideaway, will be celebrating an anniversary. Actually this is the first time Ja
BANGKOK, Thailand — Oil slicked Jay Muay’s wok, big as a satellite dish, spitting grease at a queue of hungry customers. First came scallions and tofu, sprinkled from above. Then eggs, beat into a canary-yellow goop.
The street stall chef’s hands flew into double-time: with her left, she joggled the wok; with her right, she flicked in a few fat-bodied shrimp. Lastly, Jay Muay reached for her not-so-secret ingredient: processed sugar.
She poured from a jug — one Mississippi, two Mississippi
When I walked down stairs this morning, this was the view I had from standing out in front of my apartment
As you can see the police and military have the red shirts held north of Soi 2. The Ratchadamri BTS is to the immediate left of the soi.
Red shirts begin to clash with police. Nothing too serious. Mostly a lot of pushing and shoving and both sides trying to de-esculate the situation.
During one of the lulls in the confrontation.
Red shirts eventually push t
Right outside my building on Rachadamri the police and red shirts look ready for a clash. Red shirts have started throwing water bottles and other stuff at the police but the police have been rather calm. Tensions are rising. Going back out to get more photos.
It's not like I can avoid this weekend's rally since it's right on Ratchadamri where I live. Today Central World, Amarin, Gaysorn, and Siam Paragon were all closed. They even closed the McDonald's!!! Oh the horror!! What are these red shirts doing? :-)
Actually, regardless of politics I found the red shirts to be pretty well behaved. I was surprised at how organized logistically they are. They had people handing out water to the thirsty crowds, they had some sort of water tents that I ass
When the rallies first started I made an effort to avoid them. But after a few accidental crossing of paths my concerns lessened. So today when I saw that the red shirts were doing a rally right near my place I decided to go and take some pics.
They closed off most of Ploen Chit and Rachadamri and they put a big stage right in the middle of the intersection where Central World, Gaysorn, Erawan, and the police hospital meet. There were very few farangs out and about but there were a fairly
When we announced the 555 Promotion a few people sent in some suggestions regarding encouraging those who post TF events. I liked some of the suggestions we received so I wanted to add that anyone who hosts an event will also receive a one month upgrade to Premium Membership status.
We do have some rules though (yeah, rules suck):
1. You actually have to host/organize the event. In other words, you don't get credit for posting an event like Songkran and inviting people to splash each othe
Looking for some fun on Sundays?
Some of the bars in the Soi 22 area host a pub crawl the first Sunday of every month. The festivities start at Mash Bar (can enter from Soi 1 and 2 in Queen's Park Plaza) and then continue on to Cho Cho, Hideaway, Moonshine, and the Sportsman. There always seems to be some sort of pool or darts along the way so plenty to do and good fun to be had.
It's hard to come up with a way to thank all of the loyal members of Thailand Friends for their participation and contributions on the site. Whether they're posting in the forums, writing journals, or just having fun voting for other members it's those people who help make Thailand Friends such a amazing community.
As our way of saying thanks Thailand Friends has devised a very simple and fun way of rewarding loyalty amongst our female members. We call it the 555 Promotion (ha ha ha -
Some of you might remember back in Feb we did a drunken pool night challenge. The idea was pretty simple . . . we go to four different bars and before you can shoot you have to have 1 drink. We play lowest score wins so if you make a high number you can do a shot and get a do-over with no limit (other than your body's) on how many do-overs you can do.
The beginning was great. We started at Corner Bar and several people took do-overs. At the second bar, Mash, there were also some do-overs.
How about a new type of game?
Sometime between Monday and Friday of next week I will post a trivia question on the TF Twitter account. The first 10 people who answer the question correctly will get a 6 month premium membership upgrade.
So here's how it works:
1. Sign up for a Twitter account
2. Follow thailandfriends
3. Wait until I post the trivia question (hint: I will label it TFTQ)
4. Be one of the first 10 to answer the question correctly
5. Sit back and enjoy all of the perks
Contextual advertising is when an advertisement is placed on a website based upon the content of the page it's being shown on. For instance, some of the Google Ads you see on TF have to do with Thailand related businesses because Google has deemed those ads to be more targeted towards people who might be reading a particular page on TF.
But sometimes, contextual ads can (and do) go wrong.
