FATHER - MOTHER - BROTHER - SISTER?Why no H in a word 'Sister"? Any history? Just wonder since I saw a lil girl write down these word and she spells "SISTHER". I told her there is no "H" but again I think she might just thought they should spell in the same format with "H". By the way why are we using article "an" with word "hour"? Is this only one exception or are there any other H word that come with "an" instead of "a"?

I'll have an herbal tea, please. He's an honest man. Yes, there are others.

Don't know the origins of the father, mother, brother, sister words, but notice that in the first three "th" is pronounced as it is in the word "thing", where your tongue touches your top teeth. But in sister, it is just a hard "t" as in "top."

However, some of this girl's confusion might stem from the fact that many Thais don't pronounce these words correctly. The say:

brud - der

mud - der

fah - der

and

duh

instead of "the"

It's one of those things, just as falangs have trouble with some Thai vowels. How many falangs do you know who pronounce Kong Toei correctly?

Some, but not many, I bet.

Apparently, english is not my mother tongue language, but my random guess of why we use an article an with " hour" and " honest".....I would say cos we actually omit the sound of "h" in front of these 2, so when we pronounce them ,they become "our" and "o-nest" and this applies to the rule of using an article "an" in front of Vowel sound :-)

The same thing with "honor" or "herb".... I guess "H" is silenced, and the first sound is vowel, so "an" rather than "a". But then again, English is not my native language..................

Because they are pronounced differently.

In thai they all might sound the same for you - with µ (I think). It is a common mistake we make.

but properly you should pronounce the "th" sound for father, mother, and brother while for sister you pronounce the "t" sound.

oh and why ¾èà áÃè ¾ÕèªÒ ¾ÕèÊÒÇ spell so differently?

Because they are different words! same as in this case. You see.

So I guess it was just a coincidence for the english example you got. I looked from the online etymology, it didn't show that those words are from the same root of language. So I cannot find a better explanation.
