I kind of got caught up in this crazy story and I wanted to share and ask for some help tracking down some facts.   The story is completely unconfirmed but parts of it are checking out to be true.  Some guy named Tom Grant who lives down in Pattaya where he runs Adventure Holidays Thailand (caters to disabled travelers) has set up a website where he claims that a very high profile poker professional tried to put a hit on him.http://www.phillaak-thailand.com/His site is a little difficult to read and he's posted on some message boards elaborating on certain facts so I'll retell it here.Back in 2000 he meets Phil "The Unibomber" Laak before he became famous.  Phil is in Thailand hustling backgammon games.  At some point the two meet and Phil eventually proposes a heroin smuggling scheme.  Tom agrees and Phil gives him $15K to buy some heroin and then Phil goes back to the US awaiting shipment.  Tom decides to screw him over and tells him he needs another $10K to get the stuff through customs.  Phil realizes he's been conned and refuses to send any more money.  A month goes by and Tom gets a phone call from an American ex-pat that he's friends with.  His friend tells him that Phil has just wired him $15K to kill Tom and his Thai wife and that he'll receive another $15K when Phil sees photos of both dead.  The ex-pat burns Phil for the $15K but the wife freaks out and rushes to the police station to report the incident.  On the way she gets into an accident and losses use of one of her legs.  Okay, now things start to get strange . . . just kidding, that's the strange part :-)So between 2000 and today Phil has become a poker celebrity.  He's dating film actress Jennifer Tilly and is on television constantly.  Obviously Tom's a little steamed that this guy who tried to have him and his wife killed is enjoying so much fame so he hops on a plane this year and goes to the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.  Tom meets some random journalist covering the WSOP for a website and Tom tells him the whole story.  Then he asks the guy if he knows where Phil is and he tells him that he's at the Rio signing autographs.  So the journalist goes with him to the Rio and there's Phil with Jennifer Tilly doing photographs with fans.  The journalist steps back and fires off some point and shoot photos as Tom walks up to Phil.  Immediately Phil grabs Tilly and rushes out of the casino through an emergency exit.  Someone completely unrelated to the incident and is highly trusted confirms Phil and Jennifer almost knocking him over and even remembers some of the bystanders in the photo so it was the same incident. Supposedly, this story is well known in ex-pat circles in Pattaya.  Unfortunately, all of the people who stepped forward on a message board to verify that the story dates back to 2000 all know Tom and only posted because he asked them to.  So the question is: can anybody with ex-pat ties in Pattaya confirm whether this is a well known story (the heroin and hit parts) ?  Anybody know Tom?  Is he likely to be making this up?

No mention of any heroin smuggling proposal in the link you provided.

He mentions it on the 2+2 poker site and on my site [PM me for the address] after an email conversation. In fact he says that he decided to rip off Phil because he seemed so stupid.

"Phil wanted me to send heroin back I just ripped him off because he was such an idiot."

Unfortunately, I think too many people are going to be able to guess what I do for a living :-) I play poker and what I do in Gibraltar is manage one of the biggest online poker rooms. That's why people think I'm in the mafia. Because cards are illegtal in Thailand people think I'm doing something illegal. Where I live it's 100% illegal.
