The effect of sub-prime loan crisis to my company is much more tough than I thought. Today there is a message from our interim CEO announced the Q407 result. Staff cutting is one thing he mentioned about. I carefully reading each every word in an email especially about that we will need to lay off around 17,000-24,000 staffs worldwide. I was a bit worried but still enjoyed my day.. I tried to catch up with my boss for a quick chat as I didn't get to talk to him much this week but he never sit at his desk during the day today, but it's very normal thing so I was just running around doing my job and was joking about staff cutting thing from the CEO's message. Last week I was told to learn what two girls in my team who are not the banker but support staffs doing, said I should be able to be a back up. I was just thinking "F***? I'm already over-loaded." Uptill now I haven't start learning anything from them yet so the one who supposed to teach me started asking me today that when I will start learning, said we may not get to meet each other tomorrow etc.. I didn't know what she meant to say but I was very curious. At the end she accidently said it out... I was in shocked knowing that since tomorrow I will not see 2 staffs in my team around anymore, one who leaving is not her but her buddy and another one is a junior bankerwith Ph.D., she said this is only the first lot and it could be her anytime. My boss will announce this after they already gone as it is what they want. Suddenly after hearing this, all images of my boss appeared very clear in my head, he looked so tense and oftenlly had a few hours meeting one on one with my kinda boss almost everyday. It might be very difficult to bring someone a bad news like this. This is a very shocking news to me. I never experience such situation. I wonder what's the criteria to choose who to leave or who to stay.. One of them is a support staff whom I supposed to learn what she was doing, possibly that's why I was told to learn new thing. It's a very sudden thing... I still speechless and don't really understand this. :((

Since I graduated and work for companies I experienced re-organisations and staff cutting. And more then once my own job was affected. As a result I lived the life of a gypsy, relocating several times working for the same corporation, changing company and with times of unemployment inbetween and now again.

Not much of an advise to give - except: Know about and believe in your skills, understand where they are needed, fill up and learn what might be missing - and never give up hope that things will turn out well.

Good luck to you!

We are going to see a lot more of this happening in many businesses in any countries connected to the West. A major percentage of Thailand's economy comes from tourism from the West, as the recession that is hitting the USA and Europe takes hold over the next 6 months less and less people will be able to afford long distance holidays. This will greatly effect the Thai Economy. I think the next five years may become difficult for many countries that rely on Western markets staying strong and they will look closely towards working more with China and India's economy which is rapidly growing and getting stronger for the future.

Shortyg.... My company has branches all over the world and it's global thing not just Thailand. This is cause by what happened in head office in the US. I dont see that other banks start laying off but my bank is one of a US bank that got effect from this sub-prime loan in a big time.. its not yet go to European bank tho' so not yet effect Thailand economy directly.

Babyoiy.... In the UK they have announced what they are calling a credit crunch. The UK banks have given out to much credit to the economy and people are now not being able to keep up payments, property prices are falling and more and more people are finding they have negative equity and huge loans to pay off. This is now effecting the whole of our economy as spending is slowing down and more and more business especially small ones are folding. Once the UK market starts sliding this will effect other markets as well. Although not publicly announced from our government we are in a recession here in the UK and things are only going to get a lot worse.

My firm is the first among Wall Street peers that got hit by subprime crisis -- the collapse of the 2 hedge funds-- you will know which firm I'm talking about. Fortunately, my group is doing fine. We operate as an independent group within the firm, so we are not affected by the firm's HR decisions. Plus, we just manage short-term fixed income portfolios, so there's very little subprime exposure.

So, the U.S. is heading into a short-term mild recession... I guess we will see what happens next.

Wow,, my co is number one now.. while yours is not even in top 10. Isn't UBS is a swiss bank? Im surprised to see this name in top 3, thought all are US banks that got hit. I haven't read much news tho' Only read email from my senior in HQ. I should be more active.. such a lazy ass!

Well, we are a brokerage firm. I guess it's pretty difficult to compare to full-service financial supermarket like Citigroup in terms of asset size. Umm... but whatever makes you happy with your day job :)

Today's not gonna be a very good day.

so far most of these losses that have been announced are BS. They are paper losses that have not been realized. I always wonder if they end up being realized did they make money in the end. The greedy bosses that were already paid out with huge bonus created this situation and after they get the bonus it doesn't matter to them what happens. IT is total crap. A one sided payoff. Where was the Federal Reserve Bank? Why did the Fed allow them to losen lending standards after the early 90s? Where was risk mgt? By the way, when these banks ask me for more unsecured credit I will be sure to remind them of this. I had one pissing and moaning to me today.
