Public Information Announcement

I finally got my old external HD back from my friend yesterday. I am glad it has finally returned as it holds a large part of my 'collection' (no EB, not vintage porn). Some people collect beer mats, some train numbers, but a few years ago I started collecting public information films, mainly from the US, but some from the UK too. Thanks to a friend who worked in a University Library that had many of these in its archive, I soon amassed a fair amount on video. Later, as digital formats improved, and with the addition to the net of a great resource called the Prelinger Archives, I swapped formats and greatly increased my collection. They are brilliant for just amusement, but also as a source of samples when making music.Today I want to post one of the most famous; Duck and Cover (1951) a genuine US Defence film aimed at children advising what to do in event of a nuclear attack. Its naivete is extreme, its advice useless, its entertainment value rib tickling. As an added bonus, I have added the very short TV ad 'VD is for everybody'; playing more like a toothpaste commercial, this is again 100% genuine and to quote the archive blurb; "it seems to imply that having VD will make you successful, attractive and happy. Also, the song is quite infectious..."

I'm reading a book now called "Brothers" about John and Robert Kennedy. I never realized just how hard some of America's generals were trying to push President Kennedy into launching a nuclear war against the Soviet Union - and how deep seated their hatred of him was because he refused. Frightening.

Hard to get your hands on documentary called "Atomic Cafe" contains many public information ads, along with this Duck and Cover classic. It is very scary movie to see and reminds you how close we have been to total annihilation. I loaned that on VHS tape sometime in 1990's from a library.
