Synth-pop masters Part 1
Formed in Leeds in 1978, Soft Cell were part of the huge wave of synthesiser music coming out of the UK in the early 1980's. Despite their first couple of singles doing well in clubs, they were not achieving commercial success, so there record company gave them one more chance and they reworked an old Gloria Jones (gf of Marc Bolan) Northern Soul number, and the rest, as they say, was history. Tainted Love was No 1 in 17 countries and also set the (then) record for longest consecutive stay on the US billboard chart. It has also been covered or sampled by acts in genres from metal to gothic to techno. After 3 albums, the duo of Marc Almond and Dave Ball split up and went their seperate ways. Almond continued to receive critical acclaim for his various projects, while Ball resurfaced in the 90's with dance music act The Grid.Since 2001 they have sporadically worked together again and a new remix album was released at the end of 2008, with possible live dates this summer.3 timeless classics from Soft Cell today; first up is of course Tainted Love, followed by Bedsitter, then the haunting Say Hello Wave Goodbye. More synth classics tomorrow!!
