Northern soul is a type of mid-tempo and uptempo heavy-beat soul music (of mainly African American origin) that was popularized in Northern England from the mid 1960s onwards. The term also refers to the associated dance styles and fashions that emanated from the Twisted Wheel club in Manchester and spread to other dancehalls and nightclubs, such as the Golden Torch in Stoke upon Trent, the Highland Rooms at the Blackpool Mecca, and perhaps the most famous and fondly remembered of all venues, the Wigan Casino. Northern soul dancing was usually athletic, resembling the later dance styles of disco and break dancing. Featuring spins, flips, and backdrops, the northern soul dancing style was inspired by the stage performances of visiting American soul acts such as Little Anthony & The Imperials and Jackie Wilson. There are still a huge amount of Northern Soul fans and go to any Scooter rally in the UK during the summer and you will find a Northern Soul tent, old and young dancers with their talcum powder and a lot of funky moves.A lot of the music was from more obscure American acts but covered all labels from Atlantic to Motown. As well as the dance moves later being adapted by disco and by break dancing, the Northern Soul movement was also in many ways responsible for the cult of the DJ; there was fierce competition between DJs to get the most obscure US tracks they could. They often covered the labels of the tracks so others couldn't identify them and get hold of them; this gave rise to the now established white labels of new tracks. The Wigan Casino also started all nighters; hundreds of amphetamine fuelled youngsters dacning till dawn and beyond, a definite forerunner of the rave generation!!

Now that's quality!!

Had a Soul allnighter in Hua Hin last year, me and a few mates took over a tiny late bar and played tunes till 6 am.

It was interesting to see some Thai girls and even a couple of ladyboys trying to join in!
