Scary aliens and Belgium's finest...
Finally home after a long, adventurous and at times dramatic weekend;Friday a few of us headed off to the Arches in Glasgow to see Alien Wars. This was originally developed way back in 1992 by 2 Glaswegians and played in various venues. Basically they turned whatever space they were using into a copy of the spaceship from Alien and tours were escorted round by 'genuine' Marines with aliens popping out at various points. The original was some scary sh*t but as it was done under licence from Fox there were a lot of restrictions put in place. The show toured various venues and was visited by a lot of celebs Sigourney Weaver opened the London version, and Micheal Jackson sh*t himself and left). Now it's back, without the restrictions of 21st Century Fox and a hell of a lot scarier. The Arches in Glasgow is a sprawling subterranean network under the main station, and the show takes place another level down in the basement. Suitably prepared for the tour (a few choice drinks and spliffs prior to leaving) we set off expecting a pretty similar show to 92. Oh how wrong we were; although layouts were similar, the effects and layout were much improved. The 'Marines' (with broad Glaswegian accents instead of American) were all hulking brutes who would normally be found headbutting drunks at the doors of Glasgow pubs than on a deep space mission, and most were scarier than anything Giger could dream up. Rather than paying 'guests' you are treated like the lowliest boot camp recruit, shouted and screamed at to move quicker, run like f*ck or to duck when the aliens appear! Although relatively short at 20 minutes, it is one intense 20 minutes! You never know just when the aliens will appear or when one of your guides will get devoured. Thoroughly enjoyable and soiled pant inducing though still feel it could be perhaps ten minutes longer or so... Saturday was a wee jaunt up to the wonderful city of Dundee (please note the use of the word 'wonderful' here is tinged with a slight dose of sarcasm) Me old mate Michael Kilkie had invited me up to his regular Rhumba Club gig as my 2 favourite Belgians (and 2 of my favourite Djs) David and Stephen Dewaele were making a visit. Better known as 2 Many DJs or under their recording guise of Soulwax, the 2 Belgians give some of the finest shows around. Exponents of the 'cut and paste' style (and possibly the best at that outside of Coldcut) their sets can include everything from New Order to Dolly Parton, Sly and the Family Stone to the Stooges and everything in between. As expected (and aided by liberal quantities of fine bourbon) the show was a cracker. Just under 3 hours of mash up heaven with a full crowd completely up for it.I somehow managed to still be standing at 5am and further managed to put in an hour and a half on the decks at the afterparty before finding a comfortable corner next to the man with the tequila. Casualties however, were incurred; one pair of 120 GBP sennheiser headphones and a good top, disappearing into the bag or pocket of some thieving Dundonian scumbag!!! After a minimum amount of sleep, the unfortunate designated driver for the weekend was heckled into submission and then had to suffer a raucous and smoke filled car the 90 miles back to civilisation (and yes, I mean Glasgow; compared to Dundee, Baghdad is civilised)So, home to watch the rather jolly premiership highlights (have I laughed at Man U or marvelled at Arshavin's form yet?) and awaiting the good old bigotry exhibition that is an Old Firm match to come on the telly...Life is good...Here's a bit of 2 Many DJs to give you a taste..
