S + V + áÅéÇ = S + V, expressed in the past tense.

But áÅéÇ is typically translated as "already".

So, let's assume I send email to a Thai subordinate:

Me: "K. X, please file the report."

K. X: "I did that already"

What did they mean?

The real meaning of "I did that already" in this context, was that the person did it BEFORE I ASKED THEM. And importantly, it often has a sarcastic overtone in this context.

The Thai that spoke it, however, intended it as what it means in Thai: "I have done that"

Yes, I get confused whether laew means already, before, or now. For example.. "rot ma laew" means the car is coming (present continuous), not the car came before (past tense).

Gor, Fay uan narak ;-)

hyper223+Neo: Yes,You are right. The problem is "there is no tense" in thai language.I just try to teach thai using english structure.it will be very easy for someone who just start learning thai (beginner)

Thai perspective on "tense" is difference from english.... maybe i should explain more when I have time :)

laew means already, before, or now???

exactly laew mean already ....but thais see that bus "just arrived" (coz they just see it)

Dear Khun kroo,

Today I saw the boy as he walked by I thought he smiled at me,

and I wondered...

does he know what's in my heart?

I tried to smile, but I could hardly breathe.

Should I tell him how I feel

or would that scare him away?

Kroo kha, tell me what to do,

please tell me what to say.
