For my birthday... lol...

but no no no, I was kidding. The world is waiting for ...

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles off earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Actually, I got forword mail about this... if that happen my birthday might be a special day.

I saw Mars the other night when I was somewhere over the middle of Russia. It wasn't quite as big as the moon, but it was definitely the brightest thing in the sky next to the moon. I'll be flying tonight so I hope to see it again. :)

Happy birthday p'Neung. It has to be a very special birthday when the sky lights up extra bright. Now if it was pink that would really top it off as supper special...hehe.

that would be Venus. The mars thing is a stupid hoax that keeps popping up every summer. It can never happen.I think the last time Mars was at its closest was like 2k4,and that was when the landers sprite and opportunity were launched, but visibly no different.

Yes Happy Birthday Neung!

Just a point - as long as the planets stay in their respective orbits, and even if Mars and Earth are at the closest they can get, Mars can never ever look (to the naked eye) as large as the full moon from Earth.

This is the part of the original email that slips by unnoticed "At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye."

This actually happened in 2003, and at that time I am sure someone must have writen an article that was taken out of context and bits were ignored - the reality is that at that time, Mars, when viewed through a 75x telescope, would have appeared as large as the moon does to the naked eye....

I am sure it would have been beautiful...but relatively tiny...in our night sky.
