I have got these 2 books from 2 of my Danish and Norwegian friends quite long time ago and my mom in-law borrowed them since last year. I’m so glad that she returns them, finally.

The first book is “Admiralen, Kongen & Kaptajnen” (The Admiral, The King and The Captain. The Admiral was Andreas du Plessis de Richelien (1852-1932). He was a businessman who sailed to Bangkok in year 1874 and he had connection with King Chulalongkorn.. The Captain was Hans Niels Anderson (1852-1937). He was a director of The East Asiatic Company.

The other one is “Scandinavians in Siam” by Mary Laugesen, Poul Westphall and Robin Dannhorn. It’s a limited edition book, only 1000 copies. I’m lucky, I own one of them.

There are some interesting pictures in those books and I would like to share.

This is the sale contract between Oriental Hotel and Mr. Andersen on June5, 1893. The hotel cost USD. 3000.-

Here is the Oriental advertising on "Bangkok Time" in 1892.

A picture form Dr.Elnar Ammundsen's party at the Oriental. Dr.Elnar was my friend’s husband. My friend is now 95 years old and lives at a senior institution, north of Copenhagen. I’ve got the book, "Scandinavians in Siam" from her. I wrote a journal about her when I was “periboea”.

Sorry for the poor quality of pictures. Have a nice evening to you all.

a very interesting journal Nicky especially the link with the lady you know and her husband in the book. Stephen Fry recently did a programme on America and met Butch Cassidy's sister!! Amazing how there is only 1 small step in time back to such figures!!

Correct me if I'm wrong Nicky, but the first title seems to translate to English as "Admirals, Kings and Captains" Our perspective sees the Danes as historically a strong seafaring nation - very probably the first Europeans to start colonising north America - but I can't think of any great Danish naval commanders. Way back in history, your people thought it was worthwhile to pop over to England for a spot of rape and pillage, nowadays you're more likely to arrive in an airliner than a longship - and receive a friendlier welcome!!

tut tut Peter -racial stereotyping - in fact, the Scandanavians mainly settled and traded- it was only when times were hard that they went 'a viking'; there were in fact no group who actually were 'vikings' they could be Norse or Danish
