German architect Ole Scheeren of Office for Metropolitan Architecture has designed an avant garde skyscraper for Bangkok in Thailand, called The Ritz-Carlton Residences of MahaNakhon, next to Chong Non-sri BTS station, the building consists of a 77-storey glass tower. A band of shifted, box-like elements breaks up the surface and creates terraces and balconies. There will also be a public plaza, retail space, 200 homes, a hotel, bar and restaurant. Building is due for completion in 2012. Read more. - dezeen.com

If you are not yet ready to move to Bangkok and looking for a second house for your wild parties in London, there's a four-floor, 2,957 square foot house in East London up for sale, it's Alexander McQueen's, the fashion designer of 21th century. The interior, which is surprisingly minimalist when compared to McQueen's fashion aesthetic, was supposedly done by architect David Adjaye, and the listing price is £1,700,000 (approx. US$2.87m = THB97.52m). The house is situated right on the edge of Victoria Park and has a private garden in the back. - fashionologie.com

Interested to know what people think/feel about this project as Pace Development (the 2 brothers who own and run it) are one of my clients. I have known about this project for almost a year now.

I do believe MahaNakhorn will change Bangkok forever.

Peemarc : Isn't a home is a place to make you feel... safe and warm? It does not look safe to me, but it certainly looks warm.

Pandorea : May be ugly, but it's very Mcqueen. Actually i expected more crazier decors.

I had been wondering about this site adjacent to Chong Nonsi station for a while as it is a huge site and has a lot of potential. When I saw the render for the project last month I thought that it is good to see someone trying to build something different and origianl in Bangkok. There seems to be elements of influence from the 'twisted tower' project in Malmo, Sweden or the similar turning tower proposed fro Dubai.

It has a lot of potential but I'd like to see the roof curved with some a small unique shape as it looks bland. The top level boxed apartments look rather unsightly and undermine the effect of the mid level and lower level staggered, twists. I think that the plaza could be more open, multi-leveled and with a larger central sculpture. I also wonder how much the smaller building on the NE corner will block the plaza and the lower levels of the building. The plot ratio could be better if the height was scaled back a tad and the base expanded.

Also, has anyone noticed that the mural depicted on the small building is the Dawn of Man scene with the monolith from 2001! A bit of a wank.

I also wonder if the market will be suitable for such overpriced apartments in 2012 but then I guess the developers have crunched the numbers.

It also highlights why one should never buy a new, usually overpriced condo off the plan with vacant land around your building as the owners of the project next door are now finding out especially those who purchased condos on the north and NW sides.

But all in all an exciting project for Bangkok which already has too many bland and boring towers.

Marc, there is a long thread on skyscraper city, Thai sub forum, if you want to look at some articles and comments on the project.

although I am sure the new tower will be visually stunning, it's not for me. Prefer my base closer to the ground.

The McQueen house is stunning. I know you expected 'crazier' decor Tonia, but have you considered that it has probably been returned to neutral colours to offer prospective buyers a blank canvas? I am sure McQueen would have had more colour in his house, but buyers can have difficulty seeeing beyond individual's own taste. Neutral colours make it easier for them to imagine what they will do to it. But the design itself is stunning; lot's of clean, crisp lines and an abundance of naturall light. (oh **** I am turning into Kirsty Allsop)

the ritz carlton very interesting architectural structure..im sure its sound even though it doesn't look like it - I hope it is earthquake proofed with all of that glass involved. very impressive structure..reminds me of I.M. Pei - the dude loves glass in his works and also very creative with the shapes...

A good wind and it will fall apart- Bangkok property market is a bubble just waiting to burst. A crash in this sector is very much due and will happen within the next two - three years.
