China's Empty City
Ordos, China -- is a beautiful modern city. It was built from the ground up in just five years. The streets are clean. And the neighborhoods are quiet. But something is missing. The city was built to accommodate nearly one million people. Yet, no one lives there. The city of Ordos was a government project. It was likely conceived as an economic stimulus, to boost China's (GDP) Gross Domestic Product. Building is a sign of economic growth. So, local officials started building. But five years later no one has moved in. It’s a ghost town without any ghosts.

It's crazy that most of the units have been purchased already as investments. The government needs to step in and make the place more attractive for people to actually live there...better hospitals, schools, etc.

they units are sold.... as investments from the rest of china and the old city no reason to move there. The government got what it wanted gdp growth, the developers got what they wanted... sales... everyone is happy and eventually people will start to filter in through rentals and businesses to supply the growing coal and related industries. they did the same thing with Shengzen except people already lived ...they moved them rebuilt something like half the city and rebuilt it and had people move back in.

Most important at least they are spending it on infrastructure instead of military spending

paulgh3rd -- about the military spending.. very good point indeed.

you said in this scenario all were happy..I don't know it just seems like this business pyramid is upside down.

also unattended or unused buildings after a point in time begin to decay if they are not used.

I will keep an eye on this story and try to follow-up if people start to move in.

I guess you could call this situation condo-futures :P
