Well, lions have not a mating season, and thus, estimating how many times they mate in their lives can be very difficult.

However, we know that a lioness is receptive for two weeks each time she goes into oestrus, and that the lion and lioness can mate up to 50 or even more times in one single day. (Although the copulation lasts a few seconds).

This means that lionesses can have sex countless times during their lives (about 16 years in the wild). Lions on the other hand, can only have sex for about 2 years, which is what their rule over a pride usually lasts. Lionesses usually mate only with the ruling male of each pride.

So, as you can see, the lion must mate as often as it can if he wants to pass his genes to the next generation, before he is overthrown by other lions. After this happens, if he is not killed, he will probably never get the chance to mate again.
