Durian Cake!

I was thinking of a story to share here, and I couldn't think of any until this afternoon!

We have a big boss from the US, stationing in BKK office for a few weeks. He's been super busy and mainly just hangs out with the two Directors, who are also foreigners for the past week and a half. Today a colleague suggested that we should go out for lunch with him, instead of letting him eat sandwiches from Au Bon Pan for breakfast and lunch. So we took him to "Baan Glom Gig" not too far from the office. He comes to Thailand for the first time and is eager to try everything new.

During lunch, we talked about durian and he was really interested in trying. After lunch, we went to Coffee Beans by Dao for some afternoon snack. Surprisingly, they have Durian Cake available there on weekends. So we decided to buy one for the big boss to sample. Since we had quite a big meal, I took the cake to the fridge first. A few mins after, the big boss turned around and asked about the cake.

One of my colleague went to put the cake on the plate with spoons and forks. The big boss was excited to taste durian for the first time in his life. He heard so many feedbacks from us in the office how stink it could be and how so many foreigners hate it. He wanted to try for himself.

He took the first spoon and he said it wasn't too bad. I just realized that the reason he didn't complain from the beginning might be because I gave him 2 mints before the cake. The second spoon was still fine, then came the thrid spoon. He then shouted out loud that he could smell the durian on his palate. He then grabbed a small bottle of mouthwash, ran to the bathroom and emptied out the bottles in a minute! He came back to the office and was complaining that the room stink of durian. He demanded for an air refresher immediately to the office.

But ... durian isn't that easy to get rid off!

It normally stinks ur breath for a few more hours minimum until it's done digesting. So the big boss was sitting there suffering the smell. It was so bad that after half an hour or so, he turned around and asked for some tylenol to help him got through the day!

Don't mess with Thai durian! hahahaha...

Yes the last couple of times my kids and I went out, we happened to stop in traffic beside taxis from one particular company - they have the little symbols on the window meaning : No Durian, No Eating, No Animals, No Smoking, No Farting (yes really), No Guns, No making Love....!!!

I really hope the kids didnt realise what the last symbol meant...but it was a bit graphic with two of the familiar "stick figures" if you'll pardon the pun...

I've heard it said that 80% of people HATE durian, and 20% of people LOVE durian.

Proud to be part of the 20%. Never understood the reaction so many people have towards it.

About 10 years ago, at a job in the US, one of the senior directors at our small company loved durian. So he brought one in to the office to share. He cut it open for all to see, and provided samples for the brave. Some 80%ers described it as like licking a car tire, or rotting garbage. Many were not happy about the smell. More for us. 555

Durian is one of the best fruits available.

While rich people treat themselves for a steak from argentinian cows and red wine, I am always happy when I can afford to buy a pack of durian haha :)
