Female MMA (Thai Boxing et al.)
I really love Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). I studied Tae Kwon Do and wrestling for about 8 years, so I can really appreciate it when watching professionals. I've recently started watching the females getting into MMA, and although they aren't anywhere near where the men are today, many of them would have me sh*tting my pants if I saw them in a dark alley somewhere hungry for my lunch money. In MMA, it's typically three, 5 minute rounds. If you get knocked down...it doesn't stop until you tap out or the referee stops because you cannot intelligently defend yourself. In fact, most of the fights are spent on the ground. Though most of them aren't easy on the eyes, the following video is of the beautiful Gina Carano. She is an American who is highly skilled and has raised the bar for all women fighters. She has studied Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) in Thailand, and is a worldwide superstar in MMA for her speed and strength of strikes. Listen to her comment around 2:00...hilarious.
The stamina it takes to fight one 5 minute round let alone three 5 minute rounds is incredibly high. In wrestling we had two 3 minute rounds and one 2 minute round, which left all of your energy out on the mat...and we couldn't punch eachother. Keep in mind that the tiny gloves they are wearing are more for the protection of the striker's hand rather than for the defender's face. Check them out, youtube around a bit, and enjoy.
I wonder when the first professional male vs. professional female fight will be...
Edit: I had to add in Megumi Fujii who one of the best, if not the best female fighter out there today. In her classic fashion, she breaks her opponents ankle here...
