Say hello to my little friend

About a week ago I came home late one night and there was a gecko hanging out on my wall. A small fry, really. Probably still a baby. But nevertheless there he was paralyzed thinking I might not notice a 2 inch thing standing out against a bright, white wall.

He's not dumb though. As soon as he figured out I was staring directly at him he scampered behind a picture hanging on the wall.

Busted.

I snapped this shot of him (or her . . . who knows?).

Back home I think I would have been highly uncomfortable with any animal living in my home that I didn't invite but I guess I've been in Thailand too long. I immediately accepted him and invited him to stay as long as he likes.

I'm not sure how he got to the 12th floor of the building. He's far too short to reach the elevator buttons so I can only assume that he crawled up the side of the building and, dammit, if he's willing to put in that much effort just to hang out with me I should give him a shot.

I went to bed.

The next night I was watching TV late and I saw him scamper out of the kitchen across the living room wall. He was trying to be all stealthy and would stop when I looked at him and then make a run for it when he thought I wasn't looking. He finally hid behind the AC unit and, again, I went to bed.

Despite keeping an eye out for him I didn't see him for the next four nights. Not a single sighting.

I started to get a little depressed. Didn't he like me? Didn't I have enough mosquitos for him? What's wrong with me? Why can't he love me?

Then last night as I was watching TV late again I saw something in the kitchen. There he was standing on the stove. Even 15 feet away he saw me looking at him and hid behind the microwave.

I hope he gets used to me being in his home.

You must look terrible for a gecko! Ours let me come close to about three feet, but maybe that's because they are by the dozen. They also like to sh*t on our terrace table, maybe they even aim at my beer (fortunately, they did not succeed up to now!). Anyhow, I like these little buggers because they are eating at least a small percentage of the mosquitos being around and I also think that they are looking cute!

I love geckos. Much better than spiders and they do the same job.

I had a gecko in my apartment on Sathorn a while back. I named him Gary (the gecko). He lived in my bathroom. One morning I found that I had squashed him under my bathroom mat when I stepped out of the shower. I was devastated, and flushed him down the toilet after a ceremony.

We have one called Henry. He's been with us for about 2 or 3 weeks now. He loves the toaster (probably for the crumbs) he also likes jumping out at me when I get home and its dark....the little rascal.

He used to run a mile when he saw me, now he doesn't seem bothered.

It's like he looks at me says "whassup" and then moves on...Pretty cool.

this journal is so funny...

it made me laugh out loud..

the comments are even funnier than the journal itself...

this kinda reminds me of the movie birdman from alcatraz....he too got attached to a lil furry bird..

I always liked geckos. I killed one by accident once and felt really bad about it.

Once I was in a hotel in Phuket, having coffee and cookies on the terrace overlooking the sea. There was a small, raised garden next to me and I heard something rummaging around in the leaves. I looked a little closer and found a skink, about 6 inches long. The odd thing was, he didn't make any attempt to run away, he simply watched me.

I broke off a few crumbs from my cookie and put them on the palm of my hand. When I put my hand down, he half-climbed on and ate them!

I've never seen anything like it before or since. There was a sales rep with me who watched the whole thing, also amazed. We tried to get a little video of it, but by the time the phone was switched on, he wandered off, still not scared at all.

I am in the same situation: 11th floor, one in the living room, behind the A/C, one in the kitchen; they eat my mosquito's, my ants and my spiders, so it is OK for me :P
