Just to confirm my role as insensitive asshole. The guy wasn't even in Iraq long enough to have developed an accent. He and his brother probably have few if any real memories of the place. He was adopted and raised in Australia which puts him about 1000% better off than most other Iraqi kids who aren't on the show.

The television producers hear about some sort of story like this and they jump all over it. His voice isn't on par with Paul Potts or Susan Boyle which did give absolutely amazing performances regardless of their background. His was basically, "okay" and had he not had the orphan backstory there's about a 50/50 chance he wouldn't have made it on to the next round.

Don't get me wrong, good on the guy for trying and for making the best of his new life but his singing is, at best, mediocre.

Bill not at all. Some might see it that way. I don't. Very good points indeed. (IMHO) It's a story more about human determination than the quality of the guys voice. Just as if a guy that got his leg blown clear off as a soldier and he competes in the Olympics with and artificial designed running leg and finishes the race and comes in dead last place. The old saying goes some people are just in the wrong place at the wrong time vice versa some people are in the right place at the right moment. Probably populous opinion could care less if he wins the race or not all they see is that the guy tried gave his best and finished the race. The populous might ask themselves if I was him. Would I have even tried? All people is gonna do is laugh at me anyway. This bloke probably didn't even expect to win. What matters is that he believed in himself believed he could compete and do well whether others believed it or not . He did sell himself with his personality smile and charm. Even if he was rejected I'm sure he would have been OK with that. He's probably happy in the belief that he didn't sell himself short.

I agree, of course they try to give the show some heightened drama. That's what show biz is all about. :)
50/50 chance he wouldn't have made it on to the next round.

You're right. He probably will be a one and done. (IMO) He may not finish the race but at least he had the guts to enter. If I was one of the judges on that merit alone I would have given that a whole lot of weight. (And no) the guy doesn't have a professional voice.

His voice isn't on par with Paul Potts or Susan Boyle which did give absolutely amazing performances regardless of their background.

I agree. This guy isn't even close to those caliber of performances.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy listening to John Lennon's voice but the song Imagine IMO when I first heard it I felt more about the lyrics and words not the melody, notes or even the instruments playing in the background. I have to hand it to him very clever guy . It was a wise song selection.
