Admin_2
Random thought here while here while having a cup of joe... There is some sort of formula for when it's ok to make jokes about massive loss of life. The Haiti situation got me thinking about this. Note: I'm not cold hearted, I'm just weird. I haven't figured out the formula yet, but it's something like this: Total lives lost is equal to a certain amount of months you have to wait (i.e. 1,000 lives lost = 12 months). Then you factor in skin color and/or ethnic origin, and subtract that from the total months, which would go something like this (for simplicity's sake, I'll use skin color only): White = 0% yellow = 25% brown = 50% black = 75% So from my rough estimates and minimal variables here, a huge natural disaster in Nigeria where 1,000 people lost there lives...normal social circles and the media would have to wait 3 months before they can hint at making a joke about it. There are other variables such as socioeconomic conditions of the victims. For example, jokes about the Hurricane Katrina victims are rampant, but 9/11 is still a touchy subject. What's your theory on all of this? What other variables should be added in?

melasinsh
Well, I instantly thought about the Tsunami in Dec '04 when reading the Original Posting. Just using those numbers it is roughly 1 year (12 months) per 1,000 people killed. I think about 170,000 people were lost or killed in the Tsunami. So that means in 170 years - 25% for predominantly yellow sking color (some brown from India and Sri Lanka) means jokes will be cool in about 130 years. That is why you haven't heard any Tsunami jokes.
