funky_house
I have been thinking about organising a day trip to Ayudthaya, as a TF event on my next trip to Thailand in October. The basic plan: Minibus or train to Ayudthaya, hire some bicycles, or maybe tuk tuks, visit the sites, and take photographs, lunch somewhere, relax. Nothing too strenuous. Saturday or Sunday? Which is best? Preference? Any advice or suggestions welcome, before I post it. As I say, its just an idea at the moment.
English_Bob
Daytrips seem to be popular on Sundays, as some people (including me) work on Saturdays. Boozing events are good for Fridays and Saturdays so people can recover.

As I say, its just an idea at the moment. 1) Dave is right, some people have to work on Saturday, so Sunday would be a better choice. 2) Van is a better option, compared to train. Dont get me wrong, going to Ayutthaya by train is fun, I did it before when I was an undergrad, but its not convenient at all if you would like to visit many places in one day. Some vans can accommodate up to 15 people, so it wouldnt cost you guys that much. It depends how many places you would like to visit, if its not a lot, then go by train, then rent some bikes, sounds like fun, mind you, it can be tiring though lol. Ayutthaya is not that small if you wanna run around the city by bike!! 3) Any ideas yet which place to visit?

sugar_husk
A van cost only 60 baht (person) or something not more than that as i can recall, take only hour to get there but train you'll take almost half day,a bike would be a good choice , motorbike will be a better choice , mind you with bicycle you'll miss out many good places. Ayutthaya is not that small if you wanna run around the city by bike!! 3) Any ideas yet which place to visit? Well, I am not sure. I have a list of recommendations that I have taken from Wikipedia and a couple of blog/travel sites. I need to research it a little more this weekend, to make they are do-able (near to one another). If we rent bicycles, we want them to all be in close proximity to one another, not cycling for miles and miles. If not, there are six seater tuk tuks apparently, but cycling is more fun, and less restrictive. Hotter though. :-) Perhaps motorbike hire there is an option, but I don't want to complicate matters, so keep it simple for now. The minibus does seem to be the better option. I read they depart from Victory Monument, but I am not sure if there are other departure points. That said, all suggestions on what to see are welcome. I will post the list I have later, so that some of you can provide input. At the moment, its looking to be a Sunday departure, by minibus. More to follow. http://wikitravel.org/en/Ayutthaya
English_Bob
You should hire the van and driver for the whole day... Then you've got somewhere to leave belongings (an ice chest of beer and snacks) no pedalling on a hot day and a wider range of destinations. We don't need to rush to catch a bus if we have our own. Split the cost between 16 people, it'll be cheap.
Admin_2
Definitely get a van for the day. Shouldn't be more than 2,000 baht.

Yeah!! I always go to Ayutthaya by van. I get a van from Victory monument, then it take me to Ayutthaya old city in 1 hour. 60 baht / person. However, the van just drop you in the old city, not take you around. My friends always come to pick me up at the van station. She told me some of her student do the day trip business in Ayutthaya... I might ask for more detail if you really serious about it. and another choice as p'Dave said, just rent a van, it's about 2000 baht (Excluded gasoline) you can take tour all day long. Don't forget to buy Roti Saimai back home na..... Aroi mak, but you have to know the good shop to buy, for me I like Bung Bee roti saimai.

funky_house
Reminder for those of you who have signed up to the trip to Ayudthaya. I am still waiting for suggestions for a convenient meeting / pick-up point for the minibus. Come on guys, you all know BKK far better than I do. English_Bob
Outside my place sounds good. But probably Suk 22, Larry's Dive. There's a car park for people who want to leave bikes or cars there and we can have a coffee or breakfast first.
funky_house
UPDATE: As of 30th August, the minibus is now full (barring any cancellations). There are always a few drop outs. Although only showing thirteen, there are in fact fifteen signed up, as someone is bringing two others. If more people still want to go, I will hire a second minibus, but only if there are sufficient numbers. Please see Journal linked to event for up to date info. I think we may need one more van as 10 seats each van is most comfortable and recommended. Now I reserved 2 vans
