Police are stepping up the war on personal computer software piracy and aim to reduce it by a further 3 per cent this year, the Economic Crime Division said on Tuesday.

The renewed crackdown would begin this month and initially target Samut Prakan, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat provinces, ECD deputy commander Chainarong Chareonchaiyanon said.

The crackdown will focus mainly on business and commercial companies where use of pirated software is carried out on a larger scale.

Pol Col Chainarong conceded it will take much longer to stop individuals from using illegal sofeware.

The Business Software Alliance, which acts as the computer industry's piracy watchdog, said the piracy rate in Thailand fell two percentage points to 73 per cent last year, the fourth consecutive year it has declined under the pressure of stronger police measures.

The Royal Thai Police force has vowed to make Thailand the top country in the Asia-Pacific area in terms of reducing copyright infringement, aiming to overtake Hong Kong, which last year was ahead by only 1 per cent, Pol Col Chainarong said.
