FarangFarang
Quote Cigarettes flavoured to taste like clove are becoming popular among new smokers because they are tasty and do not make the throat hurt, a seminar on tobacco control was told yesterday. The aromatic eugenol chemical compound used in the "clove cigarette" helps make the smoker's air sacs numb, prompting them to inhale deeper and subsequently get addicted to the rush of nicotine, Dr Hathai Chitanont, director of Thailand Health Promotion Institute, said. "Firsttime smokers do not choke while trying out a clove cigarette and inhale deeper. This is considered more dangerous and should be regulated," he said. The cigarettes, smuggled into Thailand from Malaysia, are widely available and at Bt20 for four cigarettes, are easily affordable by youngsters, Assoc Prof Sriratch Larpyai, a Rangsit University lecturer, said. He explained that these cigarettes come in different flavours and some even have bits of mint candy inside them, which makes smoking a delicious experience. Also, the cigarettes are sold in attractive packaging, are smaller in size and some are even marked "slim" to attract women. These cigarettes can be found in most of Bangkok's night markets as well as in Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi. Studies show that the sale of clove cigarettes is more widespread than conventional cigarettes, for which a permit is required. Originally produced in Indonesia, the clove cigarette was banned in the United States in September 2009 on grounds that it could easily get young smokers addicted. Before being banned, the clove cigarettes held a Bt1trillion market share in the US. Indonesian manufacturers later filed a complaint against the ban and won. They had cited the imports of menthol cigarettes, which are not much different from the cloveflavoured brands, according to a relevant World Trade Organisation ruling. Meanwhile, sale and possession of clove cigarettes violates two laws in Thailand: an excise law for which the violator will be charged Bt500 in fines as well as 50 times the excise duty and the public health law, under which they can face Bt100,000 in fines and/or six months in prison. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/Experts-warn-against-clove-cigarettes-30174600.html The article makes them sound pretty appealing. Lol - I was thinking exactly the same thing as I read that Anthony Kiedis biography you lent me (great book btw and I need to return a few to you - thanks). And I haven't done H for the same reason - you're always going to be chasing that first incredible hit. I occasionally date a girl who once did LSD. She said she saw a super-fast Skytrain whizzing through the scenery... Fine, except she was sitting on a beach in Phuket. Her one experience was great... It's definitely on my bucket list. But isn't that the way with most experiences? I've done lots of things in my life that had the potential to go either way. And I have to say, I've never regretted any of them. I remember doing a bungee jump that didn't go well... My verdict is, I don't like it and won't do it again. But at least I know. (Ciaran - Don't suppose you've got a contact, have you? Yep... I got a lead a few weeks ago, but turned out to be a bullshitter. Shrooms don't appeal so much for some reason... but they're still on my to-do list... Probably in Laos. Personally, as a veteran of psychedelics, I prefer shrooms to LSD any day. Big problem with acid is that just like many other drugs, it is mostly adulterated by the time it reaches the street. A common additive is strychnine (at low levels of course) which although not affecting the early part of the experience, can give you some nasty stomach cramps in the latter part. As this is the point you are coming down and feeling mellow, it can somewhat sour the whole night. Shrooms have a more natural feel and it is easier to regulate the dose, especially for a beginner. Ultimate experience is DMT - an 8 hour acid trip compressed into 40 minutes or so - very intense and not for cadet class. If you do want to try the shrooms Dave, wait a while and we will arrange something. Best for a novice to do their first trips with someone who knows what to expect. Stramash
I'm actually surprised RCs have not made an appearance in Thailand. Given that they have managed to elude the Misuse of Drugs Act here by changing the formula every time one version is banned, I couldn't really see Thai law keeping up with any changes. I've never had a bad experience with it but I can see how it could go very bad. I've never taken enough to completely lose touch with reality. I've never seen stuff like dragons crawling on the wall or anything like that. With hallucinogens, my comfort level is where I know where the line between reality and hallucination is. I can sit back and enjoy the hallucination knowing that it's a hallucination. When the line disappears I'm sure it can be a little unsettling. You also have to be in the right frame of mind/mood to take it as that will affect any experience. Setting is important, as is the company and the stimuli provided (visual or audio)

Almost like an ad :-) Quite interesting! As to my knowledge, clove cigarettes are (or at least have been - point of 1996) very popular in Malaysia and, as the article indicates, also Indonesia. And I don't think that this is because of getting "newbies" addict but just because of the taste and the habit. But you can turn everything to what you want it to be once you have the power to do so.... Actually, I smoked clove cigarettes during my time in Kuwait as we had a Malaysian at our place who used to smoke them - I like the taste and also the smell (no, I was not made addict by those as I already was a smoker that time). FarangFarang
I've smoked them before too. I was also a regular smoker and used to have a clove from time to time. But then I graduated high school and I don't think I've touched a clove since.
