I really don't like it when I get a response like the one above. I am not most people who are just fooling around with the Thai language using PBS (the Phonetic Bullshit System). I'm here studying the language and I take it very seriously.

When someone says, "Just speak English, it's easier", or when I speak in Thai and they answer me in English, I feel they do not respect for the fact that I am here studying the language, culture, and history as a primary objective during my sabbaticle here in Thailand.

I frequently write, or say,

Of course, I do understand that Thai people are sometimes don't want to strugle with foreigners trying to get through a Thai sentence when communicating. I'm from San Franciso which has many Thais and many Thai restaurants. I once addressed to my first Thai teacher, a Chula graduate, in San Francisco that when I was in Thai restaurants there, they were'nt helping me when I was speaking Thai and they were answering me in English. My Thai teacher said that Thai people can be impatient. Of course, I can understand when these restaurants are busy, that they don't have time to spend 5 minutes ordering a meal. We're talking about beginners of course and I'm past that system now.

There are a lot of foreighners who can't speak Thai. They fool around with PBS, maybe memorize a few phrases, but in order to learn the language, one should study in a decent academic program, practicing reading and writing, and the most important aspect is self and independant study. Simply going out and chatting up words you know (or think you know) doesn't cut it.

I also understand that the Thai goverment offers a Thai proficiency test twice a year. I don't know too much about it, but I understand that when students pass the sixth grade, they take the test a proficiency measure in Thai (I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about). When a foreigner takes the test, and passes it, they receive a certificate with quantifies they're Thai Language proficiency and can be used on a resume or when applying to companies where having basic Thai communication skills are important. There are some students in my school currently preparing for this exam and I one day hope to take, and pass, this test.

Also, graduating and receiving a certificate from Chulalongkorn's one-year Intensive Thai Program is also a valuable measure of Thai Language proficiency recognized by many corporations and institutions.

The other day I was speaking with someone in Thai and indicated that the restaurant we were going to was on the same street as my apartment. I mistakenly said, «ÃÂàËÃ×ù¡Ñ¹ when I should have said «Ã´éÇ¡ѹ . I apprecitated the fact the she corrected me as I've now learned this for the future. I also want to note then when a certain member on this site suggested that a good way to practice speaking is to have the foreigner speak in Thai while the Thai person speaks English, I beleive that is a terrible idea as it's important to focus on one language at a time in order to correct and aide the other person.

I appreciate that stinkyboots took the time to correct my grammar in Thai. I was actually thinking after I submitted this post that I should have written ÂèÒ§äà instead of ÃÃäà . This is a good example of how when speaking Thai with someone, it's important to me that they communicate with me in Thai as well, and if we were speaking, this would have come out as well.

Just to note, my last three Thai teachers, including my current teacher, cannot speak English. What's important is that they know Thai language (including the rules and grammar) and know how to teach it.

Most foreigners are too lazy to learn the rules of Thai writing, have no concept of tones, live and dead sylables, grammar and patterns, etc. For someone like myself that studiesat least two hours a day, in addition to classes and private tutoring, I don't like being compared to those that are simply playing with the language.

I once met someone here on TF and we chatted a bit on MSN. When we talked about meeting in person, she said she was worried because her English wasn't too good. I said that shouldn't be a problem because I'd rather speak Thai. I really enjoyed the conversation and talking with her because we were speaking exclusively in Thai, and when new words or something new came up, I'd write them down in Thai.

Zleepy she's posted and spoken before on this subject. Nothing to do with wanting to pratice English, she has her doubts about the moral character of foreigners who speak Thai, implying that it's something do with them wanting to trick Thais or have many girlfriends. You know, the "farang roo mahk" syndrome? I better be careful what I say since I already have a yellow card....

Yellowsub's corrections are indeed refreshing compared to the past when a few snooty farang tried to prove their superior skills in a condascending way. else there were rather weak responses from Thais who didn't really understand how their own language worked.

(Nothing wrong with that! native speaking Farangs often can't analyze their own language well if they haven't trained as language teachers)

Reagrding MSN, sometimes it is good practice to try typing in Thai (use an online dictionary to help) and see how long it takes before the other person begins to suspect you are not Thai
