dumper
When I was in Pattaya I tried a drink called Ya Dong. It was very strong ! I think it is some kind of lao khao (white rice spirit drink) with various herbs in it. I couldn't buy it in 7/11 but Thai people pointed out places to buy it. Usually little shops out of the way. Then someone told me that women drink Ya Dong when they are on their 'mens' or periods. So my question is, what is Ya Dong ? Is it some kind of cheap strong drink or a medicinal type drink ? khun_lung
Ms. Yellowsub: Yes, "dong" means "pickled" but can also mean "fermented". Sorry, I am not an expert in Thai but I do know some things. So in the second definition, "yahdong" would mean "brewed medicine" or something like that which is close to what it actually is. And if brewed with things like snakes or lizards or whatever, hey, pass me the viagra, please!
dumper
Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I had no idea there were so many variations of Ya Dong, or what could be in it ! So people drink Ya Dong for medicinal/ herbal purposes rather just to get drunk. Dong mai roo lom - I'll look out for it !

bigKus
Tudtu speaks about "loa khao", with which you can make "ya dong", but once, after the rice harvest, in the little village of Mae Malai, where I try to kiow kow , I was invited by the pooyai to drink "lao ya", the chinese red lao khoa. My partner for that night, told me afterwards that green foam came out of my mouth, and I remember well that I had visions in my dreams: very dangerous stuff  ..: It's sounded really scary.. glad to see you are survived But wondering why lao khao which you drink RED because Khao itseft means white..(ha) I afraid that the liquid you drink is something which Phoo Yai brewed it himself in his backyard..LOL.. ( there has lots breweries in the backyard in North and Isaan Villages ) I myself have had once drinking ya dong - herb ( they have 2 kinds for choosing one a kind of herbs two snake..wah..lol..) at Vientian, Lao last year, I drank 4 jorgs ( short ) as welcome drinks. I coudnt even stand up/walk afterward..
