I don't mean next week , but China doe's interest me in a future relocation destination.

What are the people like there , the customs , the food and employment prospects etc.....

China is a great country with so much to see ..

I got tips about china for you ja..

(1)The Forbidden City is a complete misnomer: you should walk straight in.

(2)The Summer Palace is also worth a visit. and many places to visit..(you can find them in the guide books)

(3)Beijing hotel beer prices are a total rip-off; supermarket beer prices are an absolute bargain.

(4)Be prepared to be surrounded by local vendors at the famous sites, and bargain at least by 1/3 of the price if you do intend to buy

(5)And you?re taking a bicycle tour? Stay safe! Drivers in China don?t really follow traffic laws

(6)Most importantly, bring extra toilet paper EVERYWHERE.

..I have been there once almost 10 years ago for one week. Eventhough, the places were amazing which had only seen from tv and news, nothing impressed me let alone people act toward tourists. I saw 3-4 cheating just in 10 mins from street venders.

The climate was nice not much pollution. Things may be improved by now.. I hope. :-)

BrownSugar said it all. I lived in Shenzen for a year and HK for 2.5 years, I thoroughly enjoyed that time.

In mainland China get out of the city as best you can and go to the central plains and other amazing areas, the cities are great for nightlife and sightseeing but the country, like in Thailand, is the best place to be for both history and nicer people.

Make sure your Visa is current, always.

  • 1 month later...

I never went to Mainland China except to visit someone. so can't say, but I do intend to work there later for a year, just for fun.

As for Korea, I lived there 6 years.I know it WELL, and speak the language now (reasonably well)

Great place...Very kind people and honesty that could give anyone a heart attack.

Flat deck trucks with engines running, stacked 10 ' high with computers, while the driver ran into a resteraunt for lunch.

Storefront shops leaving their goods out on the sidewalk all night, when nobody was around.

Computer shops that left their doors open and unlocked, while the owner went away.

Unbelievable...just unbelievable!

I once dropped my wallet with $2000.00 in it.

The next day some guy showed up at my door.

He had taken a one hour taxi ride to return my wallet he found.

Gave me my wallet with a smile and a bow, refused to take a reward or payment for his taxi cost, jumped back in the taxi and disappeared into the sunset.

(Of course the $2000.00 was still in the wallet when he returned it)

you just don't see the above behaviours everyday in my country, but in Korea they are common place!

Have been to China many times and really loved it. The forbidden city in Beijing, visiting The Great Wall, the terracotta army in Xian, the beaches and island in Xiamen, exploring the city in Shanghai, shopping in Shenzhen and dining next to the Pearl river in Guangzhou...

All wonderful, although you do need to either speak Chinese or have a Chinese speaker with you...

  • 2 weeks later...

Hainan was cool

Ditto- Beijing(bit polluted though)

Guangzhou is a dump

Jinghong in south west Yunnan and environs is interesting(where the Dai-(descendants of Thais) live)

Done Macau /HK too....but they're SARs .So not really China

Thats my call on what i've seen in China.Big place so i think it would take years to really see it all.Quite fancy the far west though next trip..Turpan etc.

Hong Kong is Hong Kong, not really China. Great place to work and to live.

Shenzhen is in between, near enough to Hong Kong and has always been the gateway to mainland china.

Guangzhou is really China. It has the best seafood restaurants I know worldwide. When you step out of your hotel and try to walk anywhere without your destination written in chinese letters you are lost. Hardly anone on the street or taxidrivers read, understand or speak english. Have a card with your hoteladress written in chinese with you always or you will have a hard time getting back to your hotel! In my personal experience, chinese people are helpful and mostly friendly, but in a different way than thai and western people. Look for young people if you need help, pupils and students are often astonishingly well educated and speak very good english.

Though Guangzhou is crowded with westerners during the periods of different fairs and exhibitions, they get lost in the millions of chinese people living there. Expect to still be a main attraction because of your western look and long nose when you leave your hotel and get on the prowl in chinese venues.

China is another world, and its moving very fast. Expect a total paradigm shift. Unpolished and rough. Fascinating customs and differences. And: Lots of opportunities...

Have a go when you need a change. You will definetely have it...

I have been to GZ and the pollution sucks but people are great. One thing to remember is all food comes with bones there not like in the west where most food you get is deboned at a resturant so be warned and remember dont be hard! lol Like any place watch out for scams and keep your wits about you china has a good of crime so just remember dont do anything you wouldn't do at home.

Be safe and have fun

I lived for a year in Shenzhen in Guangdong province and traveled to Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou many times. I also lived in HK for 2 years and sometimes visited Shenzhen some weekends by train as I got to know a lot of people there.

Loved it, everywhere I went. Food fantastic, people curious and inquisitive, no different in a lot of ways to Thailand, the country folk are far nicer than the city folk.

And lots of pretty girls too, just check out Lan, as good as you will see anywhere :)

I just got back from China a few days ago and I have to say Chinese people are very friendly, beer in the supermarket/shop is really cheap. The food is OK, but it's not spicy, just oily. Beijing and Shanghai are quite expensive relative to smaller cities. And yes, they mostly have Asian toilets and you have to carry the toilet paper with you. there is just loads of history behind many places in China which adds to the fun experience.
