sunsnow
i want to travel in thailand with buses and trains !!! is it safe??? and any one can tell me that is TC SAFER THAN HARD CAsh AND CC . i also know about some tips to keep my valuables and money safe in backpacker cheap rate guesthoses and hostels Buses and trains are considered safe and quit comfy. Some sort of stories there are about those VIP buses and mini buses sometimes running from Kho San Road in BKK to elsewhere. I have heard bad stories about getting valuables stolen when the bus stops at rest place or during the night. But I don't know hot to spot these kind of services. So no help here. But trains and "government" buses leaving from bus stations are in my opinion, considered as safe as any other method of public transportation in other countries ie. beware of your pockets and stuff in crowded places/trains/buses...other than that, regular wisdom, no special "tip". What comes to TC, traveller cheque, right? I have never used them personally but they can be stolen too, although the person stealing them does nothing with them, it just pisses you off as you lose temporarily your money (backpacker story from my last trip from BKK...) Hard cash is always troubling to hide especially if you carry your whole travel money. Credit card is ok to draw money from for example ATM's, no risks. Just to be on the safe side use something in very public place and check for irregularities in the feeding slot (this is also normal way of stealing card numbers in general, not especially Thailand related problem). In stores, hotels, etc there is always higher risk of getting the number stolen (I had posted article here earlier which said that SE asia is considered high risk area in what comes to credit card number theft). But life is full of risk, and your card wont be copied immediatly anyway so you have about 1-3 months time (random sample of stories from another thai site) before they will start probably using it which will red flag your card killing the card and you will lose nothing anyway (but once again, it is a pain in the ass). Guesthouse? Your money is in more risk than in more high class hotel with safety box.As a backpacker there is always the general tip of bringing an extra padlock with you when travelling, some gueshouses have designed their places this in their mind: they expect you to carry extra protection. So use extra lock if possible, also atleast try to hide your stuff inside the room and not have too much money there. Maybe carry some of them with you. But still, as always, there are stories about this too: in Chiang Mai my gueshouse/little hotel was "broken into" = security guard let a thief in and he went into one of the girls room when she was sleeping and stole her stuff while she was there sleeping...Or the one guy whose bungalow was broken into thru a window... see, you are never safe. So atleasttry to hide your stuff inside the room...spread the money to multiple places and so on. And dont leave it for the maid to find.

They dont take Visa at the Street vendors and 7-11...so just keep 5,000bht on u at all times. Thats usually good for the evening. ATM machines are everywhere.. so you dont have to worry about access to more.. Room safes... very essentual.. LOCK IT or LOOSE IT.. and that includes anytime you have a new guest in the room too... The other suggestion.. travel with friends. Safety in numbers...more than 2...

rilly
usually ATM's are prevalent enough, but it is a good idea to bring SOME TC with you because there has been an increase in people's cards getting ....errrr.... locked by their banks back home lately. then the re-activation process can maybe take a little while or maybe your bank has no 24-hour phone number. See if you can get an ATM card that is not a debit card as well, because nobody can use that if you lose it (and that does happen!) I speak from experience of running a tour agency in thailand for a year when i say that travel here is very safe, safer than America at least... in one year I have only had one report of anyone being assaulted or robbed, and they put themselves in that position by being in a shady city, in a shady part of town, in the middle of the night. -RiliNjUh@
rilly
one other thing.. TC is much safer than hard cash. There has been one instance where the security was so tight on my traveler's cheques, that even I couldn't exchange it. dude scrutanized the helloutta my signature and decided, in the end, that I am not me -RilINjuH! inamorato25
If you're staying in hostels and so on, then you need to sleep with all your valuables and passport in a leather travel pouch, and keep it around your neck and under your shirt. And don't trust anybody. When I was 19 I was hitching in Europe and travelled a few days with one US guy, then we hooked up for a few days with another US guy in Lucca (near Firenze). Totally thought we could trust him. Asked him to watch our stuff in the morning when we went to the can. When we got back, he was gone, and both of our wallets were much lighter. TRUST NOONE when you travel cheap! TC vs Cash? Of course TCs are safer, but usually you'll get a crap rate and they're hard as hell to cash. Just bring a couple of credit cards and take cash as you need it. There are more ATMs than elephants in Thailand now so you can't go wrong.
