Russell
Man, That word causes so much pain to me ... My shins can be red from the kicks i get under the table ... In the states or UK, we would say "wot", "uh", "hey dude, wassdat" but can also mean "what the hell ya talking about" ( correct me if im wrong ) for some reason arai wah is considered rude ... I Think it rolls of the tongue nicely and is too easy to use, especially when we do a direct translation into English. When do we ever say "excuse me sir, could you repeate that, i didnt quite understand you" ... never ... we just go "Whats'dat" But a word best avoided ... If you need to know any further naughty words, dont hesitate to contact me ... i have a long list of really bad ones ( whoops! ) and a track record of violence from tuk-tuk drivers. Loburt
There was a really good locally-produced rap song done by some black dude here in about 1990 or 1991 that I used to hear in the bars all the time, and the lyrics revolved around "arai wa," which he translated as "say what?!" Wish I knew who did it and how to get a copy. It was cool.
Russell
So i was being polite ... Onlynx is probably the most truthful .. Arai Wah isnt a word that farang should use lightly in everyday conversation but how often do we use a vulgar word in our everyday farang language ( whichever language that may be ) ... huh ... this translation can be just everyday expression for us. Learning a language isnt just joining up words from a dictionary, its about listening to the sounds that others use around you ...
Loburt
... and when those sounds are followed by certain odors, then I'm outta here ...
babyoiy
Arai Wa? is often equivalent to "What the Fcuk?" That is to say, it may be perfectly ok between friends/equals or in an appropriate place (a bar) but would be offensive in the wrong setting. Of course it literally means "What did you say?" but it's rarely a genuine question. Definitely not to be confused with "Arai na?" which is a polite expression meaning "Pardon me?" Yes indeed!! so u can learn it but dont say it... I wont say that to u too unless we're intimate.
daichan
Arai Wa? is often equivalent to "What the Fcuk?" I think now I got it. that's why sprite say only close friends. If you were here, huh!! Where's it?? Isaan said E-yung wah. The same maning of what you guyz talking about. But it sounds different from Arai wa. It's not polite but it's lovely sounds!! I am living Esan area but I can not speak Esan very well so sometimes I can not understand what they said(ban kan bo kao jai waa put nyan) for me not same but similar [THAI] --na (ex> arai na) = [ESAN] --duu (ex> nyan duu) still I need to study Esan hahaha anyway thanks all
PaperFlower
Ari wa?=what happen? what going on?(In bad mood) That is non politeness question..We should to say: For men: Ari krup? For weman: Ari Ka ? For Special group: Ari Hah? If you say.."Ari wa?" I will answer you " Don't say Wa si Woy".
