where are you coming from? California (your profile)?

from LAX there should be good competion...I am getting notes from Travelocity for $850 and on many carriers and they ... Raleigh-Bkk

...but a "bucket" shop or an Asia discounter might save you some cash.

Yea airasia is the way to go from what Ive been told....Its like here in the UK we have Easyjet and ryanair, get ready for cattle-class my friend.lol

Nothing on earth is like Ryanair.Admittedly never actually flown them but once booked a ticket for a friend.Bad karma has flowed ever since (they apparently charge you now for the good stuff).

Air Asia is one of the better LCCs and their Web promos are a steal .The only problem being you book em so early that by the time you get around to flying ,you've changed you mind and want to go somewhere else(or is that just me?) .Suspect they must have a ton of no shows on those rates .

I flew Bangkok Airways from Samui-BKK

Really nice airline, very impressed..but not so cheap

However, if you look around..or book ahead..might be able to get something

That's the only airline that flies to Samui, they have the monopoly as they own the airport, hence the price being quite high.

They are a boutique airline rather than a budget one though.

That is generally true but one can get cheap fares on their website for some routes at times so it is worth checking (eg. I flew with them a 2 days notice from HCM to BKK cheaper than what Airasia was offering).

They also make a killing on the BKK- Siem Reap route. They reportedly pay an annual amount to the Cambodia govt to ensure that the road from Poipet to SR is not upgraded. Samui and SR seem to be their main money earners.

Note that TG also fly to Samui since some 18 months ago but have limited slots - 2 flights a day???

Lets check the facts first..

That road is substantially upgraded in the last couple of years, and paving was done this year.

I drove there a few years ago, and the road used to be in pretty bad shape..

That is great as when I last used it 6-7 yrs ago it was quicker to walk backwards. My last 2 visits to SR have been by flight.

If your stating that the whole roadfrom Poipet to SR is now paved then that is great news. I am indeed surprised that this is the case as I thought completion was still many years away but it is wonderful news.

yeah dare asia. they teach the pilots to fly but most of the cost savings come out of teaching them to land (they took the short course not the detailed one--short course being "a good landing is one you walk away from.")

 That is why the most of airplane accidents happened during take off and landing. !!!

if you are not a fan of a low cost airline, Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways have something like discovery air pass when you book 3 segments up within thailand or indochina region.

but if you're going to book it at last minute, somehow low cost flights are more expensive than the regular ones. check them carefully.
